Global Mining Investing is a reference eBook to teach investors how to think and act as investors with a underlying theme of managing risk. The book touches on a huge amount of content which heavily relies on knowledge that can only be obtained through experience...The text was engaging, as I knew the valuable outcome was to be a better thinker and investor.

While some books (such as Coulson’s An Insider’s Guide to the Mining Sector) focus on one particular commodity this book (Global Mining Investing) attempts (and does well) to cover all types of mining and commodities.

Metals X (MLX.ASX) prospective nickel project

There is no insatiable need for a new nickel project at this time, however the time will come when nickel stocks will recapture some of their prior glory. When that happens a good stock to consider will be Metals X, an Australia tin miner, with a royalty from BHP's nickel operations, and its own ambition to become a serious nickel miner.

Cockatoo Coal (COK.ASX)

Cockatoo Coal (COK.ASX) is one of the better coal stocks in the market given this company has a number of high profile coal industry executives - mind you they are mostly marketing people. Importantly there are a number of coal consumers with significant equity in the company. The company has a large portfolio of coal-bearing tenure in Queensland's Bowen and Surat Basins hosting significant resources of semi-coking, PCI and thermal coal. These resources are being assessed and promise to offer substantial increases in reserves. The company also needs to participate in a railway extension to the Surat Basin, and in time will need to secure a port allocation for exporting coal. These issues will be addressed in time. The other critical industry for the industry is carbon emissions taxes. This is a difficult issue to assess given the political coercion, though personally I have written a book about the lack of real evidence to support the anthropological global warming hypothesis. This debate is being carried by governments and the media, and not by scientists. There remains opponents to the argument who are ignored. Critical thinking scientists are the minority. Science is not a popularity contest. When Jamie Durie, the gardening guru and TV presenter is in the Arctic telling us that seals are dying out because of global warming....our scientific scepticism has to kick in. When we are told that the ice sheets in Antarctica are melting...when in fact its one in four regions, and the ice sheets in the other regions are growing....you need to question the validity of the news.

The implication is that coal stocks could greatly benefit from a desensitisation of the global warming issue. My sense is that regardless of whether there is global warming, governments are intent on expanding their indirect taxing powers, i.e. They want a broader-based energy consumption tax. For more information on Cockatoo Coal read the company presentations or the broker reports.

Lynas Corporation (LYC.ASX)

Lynas Corporation (LYC.ASX) occupies a unique place in the world. It is one of the few exposures one may get to the rare earths market. Better still - the company controls the highest grade resource in the world - but maybe for not much longer - given the prospect of a Chinese state-owned enterprise taking a controlling stake in the enterprise. Its not just a case of 'rare earths' but the suite of rare earths, stage of project advancement and the complexity of the ore assemblage.
China already controls over 80% of the world's rare earths market. These metals are used in minute quantities in a vast array of applications. The potential for the Chinese government to 'corner the market' poses a real threat to consumers, but more importantly, a great opportunity for Lynas minority shareholders.....and CEO Nick Curtis. It seems improbable that the Australian government could block the investment given that Australia is not a consumer of these metals. It is possible though that the US or EU governments might ask the Australian government to block the investment. The risk remains...but my understanding is that the criteria used by the Foreign Investment Review Board is 'national interest' as opposed to the EU interest or America's.

For further information of Lynas read the company presentations and broker reports. This project has been around for a long time, and its soon coming to market.

Gippsland Ltd (GIP.ASX)

Gippsland Ltd is an ASX-listed, emerging tantalum producer with two large tonnage deposits in Egypt. The project has been delineated, however the project has had some difficulty securing finance. Re: How to use this ASX resource feed

Welcome to the Sheldon Mining news feed!
I use this site to stay up to date on all the quality mining stocks I like. You might ask what is a good mining or energy stock given the volatility in the market?
This is exactly why you cannot simply use this information as a stock recommendation. What you can do however is impose your assessment of opportune timing to BUY or SELL a stock to improve your odds of making a good investment. There are of course two basic approaches to assessing stocks:
1. Technical analysis - a generally quantitative approach which involves looking at price-volume or derivative data to develop entry & exit signals
2. Fundamental analysis - a conceptual approach (notwithstanding) the use of financial ratios which involves the study of a great many technical, financial, market/economic, political, micro & macro factors to develop a sense as to their impact on the underlying security.

Many of you will have the technical analytical skills, but not the fundamental analytical skills. Whilst we do not provide fundamental analysis here, this information is in fact implicit in my recognition of the stock, though it will tend to be a long term assessment. You will need to have some independent indication of timing, though my Spec Blog might offer some guidance on fundamentals.
